Board votes to close Central Montessori Elementary

FOREST LAKE, MINN. – Due to ongoing financial challenges and a projected $2 million budget shortfall for next year, the Forest Lake Area School Board voted Thursday to close Central Montessori Elementary School (CME) at the end of the 2017-2018 school year. The vote was 5-1, with Luke Odegaard casting the only opposing vote. Board member Julie Corcoran was absent from the meeting. “These have all been difficult decisions,” said Forest Lake Area Schools Superintendent Steve Massey. “All of our district’s programs are important for our students and their families. Unfortunately, in light of our current budget situation, Central Montessori is a program that can’t be sustained.” Massey cited the $2 million budget shortfall for next year, of which $1.7 million in budget cuts have already been planned. The closing of CME will account for the remaining $300,000.
