In 2017, state legislation was passed requiring public school districts and charter schools to test for the presence of lead in water.  Minnesota Statute, section 121A.335 Lead in School Drinking Water details the required testing. In April 2018, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) jointly released the Reducing Lead in Drinking Water: A Technical Guidance and Model Plan for Minnesota’s Public Schools.

The District developed a testing schedule and shall sample each building at least once every five (5) years.  Below you will find links to the reports for the testing results in each building in the District.

Lead-in-Water Results

Radon is a naturally-occurring gas that is produced below ground. It is very common throughout Minnesota. Radon is invisible, odorless and is released into the ambient air from fissures in sub-grade rocks beneath the soil.

Currently, there’s no requirement for school districts in Minnesota to test for radon.

ISD #831 has a five year plan to test for radon concentration starting during the 18-19 school year.  With the assistance of an environmental consulting firm, testing was completed for Columbus Elementary, Forest Lake Elementary, Forest View Elementary, Wyoming Elementary and the District Office.

Radon Results

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are an essential component of OSHA's Hazard Communication / Employee Right-to-Know regulation and are intended to provide comprehensive information about a hazardous product used in a workplace.  They convey information such as the hazardous chemicals composed in the product, degree of hazard, first aid measures, personal protective equipment, and many other safety precautions.

ISD #831 is required by OSHA's regulation to maintain chemical inventories for departments that routinely store and use hazardous products in the workplace.  Each hazardous product on the inventory must have a corresponding SDS.
