                       HOLIDAY OFFICE HOURS

         We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a peaceful holiday break! The winter break starts for students on Friday, December 21 and classes resume on Tuesday, January 2. The building will be closed the week of December 24-28, and January 1. 

     

    music staff picture SIXTH GRADE WINTER CONCERT ON DECEMBER 19

         Our sixth grade students in choir, band, and orchestra will be presenting their Winter Concert on Wednesday, December 19, at 2:00 in our gym. We are looking forward to hearing their wonderful performance!
         Following their concert, the students will return to their classrooms, and we will be hosting an informational conversation with the administrators from the Forest Lake Middle School. It will be a time for parents to sit down and casually ask questions and learn about all of the opportunities that our Forest Lake Middle School can offer our sixth graders. Please mark the date on your calendars and we hope you can attend!

    2ND GRADE CREATES CATAPULTS   CATAPULT CREATIONS

         As part of their International Baccalaureate program, our second grade students applied basic engineering principles through making catapults. The students invited their families to a second grade breakfast and then to stay and see what they have learned about force, motion and fulcrums as they used their catapults!

    EGG DROP ACTIVITY  SIXTH GRADE ENGINEERS

         Our sixth grade students have been applying engineering principles in the past couple of weeks by building a Rube Goldberg machine and a container that would protect an egg during an 18 foot drop. The work is part of their International Baccalaureate program unit of inquiry "How the World Works."

     

    winter image  WINTER WEATHER IS HERE!

            The cold weather season arrived early this year!  We would like to take this opportunity to remind families that students do go out for recess in weather temperatures to -10 either actual or windchill. The students will be outside between 20-30 minutes, so please have your child bring their winter weather clothing including snow boots, snow pants, hats and mittens. 
           In addition, please be sure that we have your current phone numbers at school as all Connect Ed voice messages about school closings/late start will be sent to those numbers. 

     

    shine time items    NOVEMBER SHINE TIME AT SCANDIA!
       
          On November 30, Scandia Elementary celebrated November's "Shine Time Morning Meeting," our all school assembly dedicated to honoring those students and classrooms who have demonstrated safe, respectful and responsible behaviors during the month. All students who earned a November STAR ticket were eligible to win some cool prizes. 
          Classrooms also earned special "Golden" awards for their exceptional work in following the essential agreements during the month of November. The classroom winners for November are:
          Ms. Pearl's class: Golden recorder for Music
          Mrs. Klausen's class: Golden book for Media
          Mr. Kotys' class: Golden lunch tray for lunchroom
          Ms. George's class: Golden football for recess
          Mrs. Peterson's class: Golden globe for Chinese
          Mrs. Duncan's class: Golden tennis shoes for PE
          Mrs. Hoganson's class: Golden vaccuum for cleanest classroom

    The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

Events

  • OPEN HOUSE
     
    This year, Scandia's Open House will be held on Thursday, September 13, from 5:00-6:30 pm. Come and see our newly renovated building!
     
     
    BREAKFAST TOGETHER
     
    Each month a different grade level is invited to come and have breakfast together from 8:30-9:05 in our cafeteria. Invitations are sent home prior to the event.
     
    WILD WALK
     
    Scandia Elementary's Wild Walk is on Friday, October 12, 2018. Families and neighbors sponsor students to participate in physical fitness games during the day. This is our PTO's primary fundraiser for the school year.
     
    CONFERENCES
     
    Fall Conferences are October 15, 16, & 17, 2018. Spring Conferences will be held on March 19, 21 & 22, 2019.
     
    DALA GALA
     
    Sponsored by the Scandia PTO, the Dala Gala social event is for adults to support Scandia Elementary IB World School and to celebrate our success as an International Baccalaureate World School. This year's Dala Gala is on Friday, February 1, 2019.
     
    ART & ACADEMIC FAIR
     
    The Art & Academic Fair is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their inquiry into science, art, history, technology and creative writing. It is held on Friday, February 22, 2019, from 5:30-7:30 pm.
     
    CARNIVAL
     
    The Scandia PTO sponsors a school carnival filled with games, raffles, food and fun! The carnival will be held on Friday, April 12, 2019 from 5:30-7:30 pm.
     
    ACADEMIC AWARD CEREMONY
     
    Student academic excellence and sixth grade graduation are part of this yearly event. The program will be held on June 6, 2019 at 10:00 am.
     
    TALENT SHOW
     
    "Scandia's Got Talent" our annual school talent show will be on June 6, 2019.

SENN

  •    SCANDIA ELEMENTARY NEWS NETWORK

    SENN  
     Scandia Elementary News Network (SENN) is a weekly news show designed and operated by our sixth graders. Throughout the school year all sixth graders who want to will have the opportunity to work at SENN at various positions, such as news anchors, camera, and director. This year we are using "green screen" technology and are able to save each broadcast. Thank you to our technology integration specialist, Billee-Jo Martin, for helping our students learn about this new technology.
